the concept is to provide key technologies and infrastructure to create a massive UK computing and data grid. Computing grids allow geographically distributed organisations to share applications, data and computing resources. A new model of computing, Grids are clusters of servers joined together over the Internet, using protocols provided by the Globus open source community and other open technologies, including Linux. Grid protocols are designed to allow companies to work more closely and more efficiently with colleagues, partners and suppliers through more efficient management.

Project eLiza, has just celebrated its first anniversary of the launch of self-managing technologies for IBM eServer. This presentation will describe the vision, the eLiza capabilities within IBM eServers today and the IBM product plan. Simon will outline the Quality of Service improvements offered, and capabilities introduced to reduce the overall cost of support for IBM eServers.

The emergence of the Linux operating system is a phenomenon. Barely 10 years old, a virtual newcomer, Linux is now challenging for marketshare with Microsoft, Sun, HP & IBM. How can this be ? What is it about Linux and Open Source that is driving this ferocious growth ? How can "free" software provide a viable business model ?

In this session we will look at the origins and attributes of Linux.  Doug will show how it is uniquely suited to solving many of today's business issues in IT. The session will also explain IBM's one billion dollar investment and the return on that investment that is benefiting many customer around the globe today.
