10:00 Managing a Mobile Workforce

Peter Bays, IBM

Managing a remote workforce: practical difficulties and technical hurdles encountered in managing a remote and mobile workforce, and how they had been overcome. Today we are in a culture of change, and no longer need to go to an office to work to be productive. More and more companies are being driven by employees, the new wave of graduates, legislation and general business dynamics to provide a more flexible, cost effective working solution. To continue the momentum as an industry leader, and an employer of choice, we have and continue to take steps "To empower all IBM employees with the means to access information and perform their work anywhere and at any time.". This session will cover some of the steps we have taken to move from vision to "business as usual". Such as: what education is available to managers, and how do they stay in contact, develop and nurture a virtual Team? And, what education is available to employees, and how do they know what they are entitled to, and how do they get it?
Peter Bays has nearly 30 years in the building, property and site operations industry. He was educated in California, USA and has dual British and American nationality and has been based in the UK since 1987. Over the past sixteen years Peter has had various EMEA responsibilities with the main focus of meeting the changing business requirements with appropriate tools and environment.

11:30 Extending the Network

Trevor Dearing, Nortel Networks
With changes in working practice and culture many organisations are realising that gains in both operational efficiency and productivity are achievable by making the workforce more mobile. New technologies like home broadband, wireless LAN, 3G telephony, IP VPNs and IP Telephony have changed what is possible. The challenge is how to make the best use of each and to do this in a safe and secure way. In this session we will look at these technologies as well as the how the change in user appliances have changed the attitude to remote and mobile working. We will also look at the cost model and the real life experiences that have made it work and those that have caused problems

Trevor Dearing works for Nortel Networks heading a team deploying mobility solutions to enhance the organisations productivity. This EMEA wide role means that most of his life is spent on the road so forcing him to live with the same mobility solutions.

12:30 Lunch

The afternoon sessions bring together three different providers, and are by nature product specific. However, the three products represent complimentary, if somewhat overlapping, solutions, and have been chosen to represent some of the different solutions available. The presenters have all been made aware of the CUA's code of conduct for speakers, and will be focusing on technology and case studies, rather than delivering a sales pitch.
