Practical Networks for the IT Professional
19 November 2003

This will be an intensive full day on a number of carefully selected networking topics. It assumes no particular level of expertise from delegates but guarantees that your level of knowledge will be considerably higher at the end of the end of this event than when you start.

The morning will cover some important networking topics, including new technologies, managing the new environment and the theory of Virtual Private Networks over the Internet. The afternoon will be devoted to a practical view of Linux, from an introduction through administration and security to connections to the wider world.

The presenter for the whole day is Laura Knapp, a Senior Networking Consultant for IBM based in North Carolina, USA. Anyone who has experienced any presentations by Laura will know of her ability to present her subjects in the most informative and interesting manner. She is a frequent winner of speaker awards at the Common US user conferences and only last month she won the best new presentation award for her Introduction to Linux presentation which is included in this agenda.

The CUA is very proud that Laura has agreed to visit the UK to do this unique day.

AGENDA

9.30 – 10.30  Advances in Networking
You are responsible for managing your IP network.    But what are the networking groups and the applications group doing to you?   They keep adding new functions and technologies to the network and seldom inform you of what's going on.    This session will pick a few 'hot topics' in the networking arena and fill you in on what they are, what they are doing on your network, and how they may (or may not) impact your business..

Included are discussions on:

  • Gigabit Ethernet

  • Wireless LANs

  • Voice over IP

  • Multiprotocol Label Swapping

10.30 – 11.30  Managing High Speed Networks

Increasing backbone traffic, multi-media, and visualization applications are rapidly increasing the bandwidth demands on our existing LANs.   Several technologies have emerged to handle high speed movement of information, but how do you know how well your network is running? What worked in the shared LANs and leased WANs of the past may not be as efficient in today's expanding high speed networks.   Find out the management elements required to keep your networks running, your users happy, and management contented.

11.30 – 11.45  Break

11.45 – 12.45  Virtual Private Networks

Many companies are evaluating the continued growth of their internal private networks, and are increasing the number of users who dial into their network.  With the growth of the Internet and the availability of a local connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), the potential to use the existing Internet to provide a virtual private network (VPN) appears real. This session looks at the technologies used in providing VPNs, the techniques used to secure private data, and some items to review before making a corporate decision to use a VPN in place of your own private network

12.45 – 13.30  Lunch

13.30 – 14.30  Getting Started with Linux

Linux appears everywhere and now it is taking over.  While it is different from other operating systems, it is not as complex as some think.  During this session we focus on three critical areas:  First, we look at the options for running Linux.  Second, we give you a high level view of Linux, what it is, its command structure, and its overall system functions.  Finally, we will look at some items that are common to a business’s existence that aren't available on the Linux side.  So rather than shy away from Linux, have the background to make an informed decision

14.30 – 15.30  Linux Administration and Security

As your company moves Linux systems into the mainstream, the security and administration of these systems becomes a major concern. Luckily Linux has tightly coupled administration and security so when you discuss one area you focus on both.     Learn about the best practices to use in setting up your Linux system, how to handle permissions, and how to protect your systems from unauthorized access. Come and learn how to translate your knowledge of security and administration into the mechanisms and terminology used in the Linux world.

15.30 – 15.45  Break

15.45 – 16.45  Connecting to other Operating Systems using SAMBA

As many of your businesses move to Linux servers, how do you continue to connect to the 'distributed' devices? You will continue to use the same SAMBA connectivity that you've always used. This session describes how to get SAMBA running on the mainframe and some tricks of the trade that will make your mainframe Linux appear as a member of your distributed workgroups and domains

Laura Knapp

Laura joined IBM in 1985 as a field Communication Specialist focusing on LAN technologies. She was influential in the international rollout of the original Token-Ring products focusing on detailed technical support and education for both customers and internal IBM field forces.
In 1990 she moved into a development role focusing on IBM's product movement into new environments including work on Client/Server Computing, Network Computing, and the Internet. Laura provides technical support for customers and IBM field personnel, speaks to IBM User Groups and International trade shows, and provides press support through briefings and technical assistance.
Laura participates extensively in trade shows (Comdex, ComNet, PC Expo, Internet World, Internet Commerce Expo...) and is recognized as an international speaker on Networking. A recognized networking expert, her articles have appeared in Common Knowledge, Midrange Computing, AS/400 News, AS/400 Showcase, and other national publications.
Prior to joining IBM she worked for 7 years as a research chemist for Johnson and Johnson. A change of career occurred in 1976 when she joined Texas Instruments. Her work in the computer industry covered software development and technical support within Texas Instruments' worldwide SNA network and support of the implementation of LAN technologies within Texas Instruments. This experience provided her a solid base of skills in the communication arena that she will share with you today.
