- 10:05 Introduction
Matthew
Ashton, IBM Computer Users’ Association, Edexcel
Welcome
and overview of the days briefing and content.
10:05
- 11:30 iSeries Navigator (part 1)
Richard
Shearwood, MITL
Richard
will cover the main features available through the new iSeries Navigator,
with the emphasis being on functions that are only available through the
GUI. He will show you the key components of Management Central and explain
how the components of that Systems Management application can help you
day-to-day. He will also cover how the iSeries Access family can allow you
to manage your system remotely via Web and WAP. Securing the iSeries is a
key part of this briefing.
Richard
Shearwood is a Senior Technical Consultant with MITL, an IBM Premier
Business Partner. Richard began working on the System/36 in 1985 and moved
rapidly through System/38 to AS/400, AS/400e and now iSeries. Accredited
for e-business solution design and a participant in IBM’s beta programs
for V5R1 and V5R2, he has a long familiarity with the subjects of this
briefing. He has worked for several banks and finance companies and now
designs and implements technical solutions to the diverse business issues
that MITL’s customers bring forward.

13:30
- 14:15 Get a grip on Systems Management
Lorraine
Cousins, Halcyon Software
Lorraine
will take you through some real “disasters” and the reasons why they
happened. She will talk about why systems management is now so important,
why you need to protect yourself and tell you about the biggest causes of
disaster – and how to avoid them. Finally there will be some useful
hints and tips (including one she calls “IBM’s best kept secret”) to
keep you one step ahead.
Lorraine
Cousins is Managing Director and co-owner, together with her husband John,
of Halcyon Software Limited. Lorraine started out as a “Computer
Assistant” on the System 34 back in 1980 and saw the arrival of a System
38 in 1981. She became Data Processing Manager at Sodastream in 1983 and
designed and wrote most of their in-house systems. In 1995 Halcyon
Software was formed to develop systems management software and it quickly
gained a reputation for producing high quality and feature-rich software.
14:15
- 15:00 IFS
Richard
Shearwood, MITL
In
this briefing Richard will introduce the IFS, discussing the history of
this technology within OS/400, where and why it is used today and the
fundamental ways in which the IFS extends the capability of the iSeries
platform. He will also discuss the issues of security, backup and recovery
on the IFS.
15:00
- 15:45 SMTP, FTP, QNTC - iSeries in a connected world
Stephen
D. Way, COMMON UK, Johnson Matthey
The
development of OS/400 to allow TCP/IP standards has bought with it a whole
new world of utilities. This presentation will show how and when to use
some of these, such as using FTP for manual and automatic data transfer,
SMTP to enable e-mail on your iSeries and QNTC to access documents on your
Microsoft servers directly from the iSeries, and how they make live easier
for the iSeries shop in a multiple platform environment.
Stephen
Way has worked in computing for over twenty years, on IBM mid-range
machines for the last fifteen years, and is currently a Divisional IT
manager with Johnson Matthey plc. He is responsible for the development
and maintenance of production iSeries systems on three continents, IT
strategy and infrastructure planning for the company and is in charge of
e-business applications. Stephen is Director of COMMON-UK, the UK’s
largest iSeries user group, part of both the UK IBM Computer Users
Association (of which he is a Council Member) and of COMMON Europe. He is
a contributor to iSeriesNews.uk.
