Past Events of the CUA 2007 January 25th Linux in the Corporate – get the facts Linux has been around some time now, and has gained increasing respectability. But how is it being used in the datacentre, and is it an alternative to Windows? In this briefing we will investigate how corporates are using Linux, and how it can save you time and money. Novell recently made a big splash in the news when they signed an interoperability agreement with Microsoft on Windows/SUSE Linux Enterprise Coexistence. Gartner described Xensource as “possibly Microsoft’s greatest challenge” and said "XenSource's technology threatens to loosen Microsoft's grip on the PC market, and open up the PC for non-MS software that runs in conjunction with Windows, it's like an operating system for operating systems, and it can run multiple environments simultaneously." On the Workstation front, Novell will be demonstrating SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. Also on show will be Open Office and Open Project, and a discussion about the practicalities of using open-source software on the desktop – and reducing license costs. Nick Davis of IBM will round the meeting off with IBM’s Linux strategy, looking at the enterprise offerings and directions IBM is taking with Linux.

2006 January Home working has been with us for some years, now, but with the advent of broadband, cheap home PCs and dial-up connections, many employees want to extend their day by working from home, or into the evening. Hot desking policies and a mobile workforce can also mean a headache for the IT manager, but a cost reduction for the organisation. At this one day briefing, we will examine how one major company has approached these problems, and then look at some of the technical and legal issues that surround a mobile workforce. The day will finish with three different solutions, which together can provide one or more answers to these issues.
February 22nd Value Management - interactive workshop Value
Management is much more than just the topical subject of benefits management.
Benefits management is a necessary part of Value Management but so is
project/programme management, service delivery management, business
transformation management, financial management and the underlying economics of
the organisation being served and the information technology (IT) itself. What
matters is how all these disciplines interact. If they are uncoordinated value
will certainly be destroyed – doing nothing would be better! This workshop is a
necessity for those managers facing the immense challenge of coordinating these
activities so as to derive the value executives are now seeking from IT
expenditures.

Spring Symposium - i5, Full Circle? 16th IBM Workplace
You've probably heard a lot
recently about IBM's new Workplace product set. About how it will
provide you with a great, integrated collaborative environment and, yes,
it even does email too. The messages, delivered direct to you by the
best Workplace speakers in the UK will help you understand how IBM’s
Workplace can help your business to grow and why you might never need to
pay Microsoft any money again! Did you realise that Workplace is one of
the best environments in the world for application development? Or that
you can use it purely for eLearning? Did you know that you can use it
to help build and record your business strategy or to write and drop
your processes into a workflow environment without involving your IT
department?
September 19th On Demand Business This briefing will examine the concept and practical aspects of what IBM calls On Demand. It promises to be a very comprehensive day featuring very knowledgeable speakers covering every aspect of this IBM initiative. From the ‘helicopter’ overview perspective right down to hardware and software platform information. After attending you will be ideally positioned to review your organisation and its ability to utilise this exciting opportunity. One interesting case study that will be presented is how IBM helped to keep the wheels running smoothly at Wimbledon this year and we will be using this to illustrate the overall concept and delivery of On Demand. The intention from all speakers is to address the topic and inform the delegate in a manner that gives immediate practical information that can be interpreted without the sales and marketing hype to cloud your understanding.
October 10th - 11th Common UK - iSeries Symposium You won’t want to miss the Rochester Roadshow coming to Bristol this year. In addition to the IBM speakers joining us from Rochester in the US, we have augmented the symposium with a number of local experts ready to raise the knowledge bar among our delegates. There is something for members from all aspects of the IT department. In total there will be 22 sessions including speakers from the IBM laboratories in Rochester and a one day RPG University attendance at which is essential for any RPG specialists. As with all Common UK events you will have plenty of opportunity to relax with old friends and meet new ones.

23/24 April 13th ON Demand Business At this briefing we will examine the concept and practical aspects of IBM's ON Demand – Business programme. This will be a very comprehensive day containing some very knowledgeable speakers to cover every aspect of this IBM initiative. From the ‘helicopter’ overview perspective right down to hardware and software platform information. After attending this briefing you will be ideally positioned to review your organisation and its ability to utilise this exciting opportunity. A number of case studies will be reviewed to illustrate the overall concept and delivery of ON Demand – Business and the intention from all speakers is to address the topic and inform the delegate in a manner that gives immediate practical information that can be interpreted without the sales and marketing hype to cloud understandings. May We are delighted that Jyoti Dodhia, an IBM iSeries/Windows integration environment and IXS/IXA specialist, and one of the leading experts in this area, has agreed to open this day for us. As management of the Windows environment within the iSeries is of concern to many people she will be discussing the integration of Windows servers through the use of IXS/IXA technology within the iSeries architecture. A single view of both the native iSeries environment and the integrated servers is available through iSeries Navigator and she will be providing practical insights into the setup and application of this technology. Glenn Robinson, a renowned specialist from Quattro Consulting, will be describing how IBM's Virtualisation Engine encompasses the integrated Windows environment leading to a truly integrated and consolidated system. In the modern world, where nearly every business exploits a number of technologies' security, is an obvious concern. We are thus pleased that John Taylor, from Typex, a popular speaker at Common events worldwide, is able to join us to discuss the use of single sign-on (SSO) which combines the robustness of the iSeries environment with the integrated Windows servers. June 15th IBM Hursley The day covers a range of technology topics and is a unique opportunity to get the latest positions on these areas of development together with information from a number of IBM UK business areas. A significant bonus is the venue – those that have visited IBM Hursley before will remember the unique combination of buildings and facilities created there, combining the old and stately with the modern and very practical development laboratories. This briefing day is always a very popular event in the CUA calendar and early booking is advised as delegate numbers are limited. July 6th LPAR and Server Consolidation This event reflects an increasing interest amongst
organisations to reduce technical infrastructure costs and/or optimise the use
of existing systems through activities such as consolidation. In supporting this
trend, the capabilities of the iSeries have both changed and been enhanced
greatly over the past 1-2 years, making it even more viable as a platform for
multiple workloads, with the introduction of the integrated virtualisation
engine adding support for AIX as well as Linux and OS/400 (i5/OS) workloads.
With all these updates, the cost benefits of looking at LPAR / partitioning have
improved and many companies that formerly did not see this technology as
offering value are now changing their views. What are the facts as opposed to the marketing hype? This dedicated day is aimed
at all those that are just starting to implement LPAR and/or considering whether
consolidation should be part of their ongoing IT strategy. The objective is to
provide you with the information and guidance to get you started, and to do this
the CUA is supported by a number of recognised specialists including
representatives from IBM and key Business Partners. Sessions will cover market
trends, and overview of the iSeries technical capabilities, as well as detailed
sessions showing the functionality in action, completing with a case study from
a service provider that has successfully installed a dual machine LPAR
configuration with multiple i5/OS and AIX partitions. September 13th Value Management - interactive workshop Value

This is an additional meeting to our planned schedule and is in response to interest in IBMs recent drive to Service Oriented Architecture and the changing scene of software investment/vendor partnerships. Attendees of this briefing will receive detailed but not deeply technical information regarding IBMs Lotus Notes V7.0 and Workplace products that will provide a sound basis for investment decisions in these products for their organisations. COMMON
UK – LPAR, LDAP and Single Sign-on February
This
is one of a number of opportunities for IBM’s Channel Partners to hear the
latest news from IBM about upcoming projects, developments and events that may
affect their business. Simon Pendlebury, the sales manager for IBM business
partners in the UK will be speaking and providing an update of any news
regarding IBM and the Channel community. The major focus for this event is the
IBM secondment programme. We will be looking at how this works and how it can be
of benefit to your company. You will be able to ask questions directly to IBM
through a panel session at the end of the meeting and there is ample opportunity
to mingle with fellow channel partners at the end of the event.
As well as covering the more technical aspects of the whole process such as the type of solutions available for key systems.

Agenda
April This forum is intended to fully explore aspects of this topical subject that bring together the broad use of the Windows operating system with the security, robustness and richness of the iSeries platform and DB2 database, particularly with the enhancements scheduled to be delivered with version V5.3 of the OS/400 Operating System. Subject matter such as Single Sign-On and Enterprise Identity Mapping is presented to illustrate the significant operational benefits of integrating Windows into the iSeries environment; not to mention the serious cost benefits of such an exercise. There are also a number of significant control issues that are covered in respect of managing integrated servers; issues such as back up strategy, event monitoring and application of updates as well as procedures that allow for aspects of Disaster Recovery Planning and Data Replication between the Windows Sequel Server and DB2/400 databases. It is intended to illustrate the real business benefits to be gained from this process with testimonial from those who have gone down this route as well as a view of the technical aspects of integration from the IBM Rochester laboratories. May 11 Content With Your Intranet? (Portals and Content Management) High on the list of corporate IT concerns at the moment is how to make best use of web technology for employee intranets and customer information. Portal and content management software gives the control of the information the business needs to publish back to the information owners, and takes away the need for day-to-day intranet management and publishing from the MiS team. This briefing brings together industry leading vendors to demonstrate, with the aid of case studies, how these technologies works, and also how some of your existing infrastructure can be leveraged. And it could help you save money! June July After being closed for major refurbishment the IBM Hursley labs opens its doors to the CUA again this year for an update on all the latest developments within the IBM development world. Previous attendees will know that the Hursley facility is second to none in the development of new technologies that IBM go on to market as products in future years. This is a ‘showcase’ opportunity for delegates to hear about what is happening behind the scenes for technology developments within IBM. All sessions are presented in the historic Hursley house environment and this briefing allows delegates to enjoy both the futures/technology aspects and a visit to what is a unique facility to enjoy.
Sept By popular demand, September sees the COMMON UK Domino Day. At this event, we will address Domino 6.5 enhancements, covering all the details of the new, closely integrated release and also features such as spam management and easy deployment using Notes Smart Upgrade and Domino Policy Based Administration. We will be reviewing remote working options for Domino users and rounding things off with a user's story of implementing and customising Teamplace, with Sametime and Websphere integration, to provide customer extranets. October The capabilities of Linux and the applications available have constantly changed and increased over recent months, but there can still be confusion as to whether it is suitable for any particular environment. What are the facts as opposed to the marketing hype? This dedicated day is aimed at all those that are just starting to implement Linux, or considering whether it should be part of their ongoing IT strategy. The objective is to provide you with the information and guidance to get you started, and to do this the CUA is supported by a number of recognised Linux specialists including representatives from IBM and Novell/SUSE. We will cover the following topics:

26 iSERIES OPERATIONS NAVIGATOR, IFS AND MESSAGING BRIEFING
The iSeries Navigator is IBM’s often-overlooked
gem. IBM’s goal in developing iSeries Navigator was to modernise the system
management user interface from green-screen to a graphical one. They managed
just this and then added more. Ops Navigator in v5r1 had some major enhancements
and with v5r2, IBM saw fit to change the name to iSeries Navigator to
differentiate the product from its earlier incarnations.Managing the iSeries
meant trawling through menu options or using system API’s. Most, if not all,
system commands that are traditionally accessed via a green-screen are available
within the GUI. It is efficient and far more intuitive to use.Jobs, users and authorities, database objects,
performance monitoring, SQL monitoring and scripting plus many more features are
accessible through the GUI. As time goes by, IBM will be developing new features
that will only have a place in iSeries Navigator and not as a traditional
green-screen interface. Sites with multiple networked iSeries systems can
utilise the Management Central feature to manage the multiple iSeries’ from a
central point.iSeries Navigator is provided as part of the operating system and
even though it is installed from the iSeries Access for windows media, it
doesn’t require a separate license.Anyone tasked with managing iSeries
functions, from programmer to technical specialist, operator to data centre
manager should attend this workshop to see first hand the advantages to using
iSeries Navigator in an impartial manner. September

December 10 Legal issues One
of the major headaches of any IT manager or director is making sure that they
are in full compliance with all aspects of legal requirements. In
the past year one major change has been the flexible working law. Any employee
with a child who has been working for your company over a few months can request
the ability to work from home or flexible hours. It is not enough for you to
just say no - you have to provide a justifiable reason. This
event on the 16th December will cover this law in detail - looking at how you
can protect your company and it will tell you about legal obligations that you
have to comply with, regardless of what your actual response is. We
will also be covering the data protection act, contracting on the web and
copyright, trade and domain names. At
the end of the meeting there will be an open forum for you to ask any questions
that relate to IT/Legal. 2002 23rd - LINUX will the penguin migrate to a larger climate This
year the CUA are off to a flying start with the first of our NEW
Breakfast Briefings. 'Breakfasted and educated in two hours' is our
objective, and we plan to deliver a handful of these special
briefings throughout the year. Last years feedback suggested that you
wanted some shorter more focused briefings in addition to the usual high quality
technology updates, briefings & seminars. You also wanted to hear
about topics that could affect the way you do business in the future , and also
to include more S/390 subjects to cater for our breadth of membership. To this
end we have put together a series of Breakfast Briefings - kicking off with
Linux. Linux is the never ending roller coaster ride of IT, you
rarely hear about anything else from IBM, ISV's and Industry analysts at the
moment. I truly believe that if we could skip forward to the future and look
back on what transformed the IT world, there will be three major milestones in
IT history: The year 2000, The Internet and Linux !!.Join us for breakfast for
the first of many, and learn how Linux may affect your IT infrastructure and
business processes today, and in the future.
February The fastest growing part of the iSeries server market is the Domino server arena. Domino is a powerful tool and this meeting looks at how it can be used alongside existing iSeries applications, and how you can get the best out of your Domino licence. The keynote speaker is Claus Klint, EMEA iSeries Domino Sales Manager for IBM, and the rest of the day is made up of presentations from the top Domino Business partners.
March This
group - formed last year by active IBM CUA volunteers continues to ensure that
the UK Business Partner community is able to work in the most effective ways,
ensuring maximum benefit is derived for Business Partners from their
relationship with IBM. Much has changed since the introduction of the IBM
Business Partner programme, in fact 'change' is the normal state of business
relationships in our industry, at least it feels like that. As an IBM Business
Partner – you need to be constantly aware of all the implications of
partnership changes and new opportunities that may be available from the
partnership relationship. This briefing will give you both up to date
information on the specific topics within the agenda and also an opportunity to
ask questions directly of the senior IBM partner programme management. Our
speakers will address the agenda topics as well as open forum questions –
enabling all attendees to get answers to specific issues. 21st - Legal Seminar We are all used to receiving various offers of advice on how to deal with the needs of registration and compliance. These offers come with price tags attached – the IBM CUA is pleased to offer you an alternative approach. Come and listen to an IT Manager explaining the issues with registration and compliance from his viewpoint and then the ‘legal-eagle’ expert explain in plain terms what the actual position is regarding these concerns. The meeting will also have a Q & A session to allow attendees to ask specific questions that reflect particular issues that face their organisations. This will be followed by refreshments to enable informal discussions to continue. This seminar is only available to CUA members and is free. April 16th - Websphere – juggling Spheres over your web “Web Enabling your Business” It sounds a bit old fashioned now as most
businesses (and domestic internet users) have their own web-sites. We've lived
through the dot com hype and heard the reports about the early 'failures', but
now that serious business is driven via the web - it's time to get serious about
your choice of application server and its deployment within your environment. A
website needs to be available 24x7, whether internal or external, and therefore
needs a solid infrastructure in place to maintain availability & performance. To quote the Patricia Seybold group "Once
you connect customers into your company's business processes and systems, you're
suddenly standing naked in front of your customers". May 28th - Business Partner Meeting Much has changed since the introduction of the IBM Business Partner programme, in fact 'change' is the normal state of business relationships in our industry, at least it feels like that. As an IBM Business Partner – you need to be constantly aware of all the implications of partnership changes and new opportunities that may be available from the partnership relationship. This briefing will give you both up to date information on the specific topics within the agenda and also an opportunity to ask questions directly of the senior IBM partner programme management. Our speakers will address the agenda topics as well as open forum questions –
enabling all attendees to get answers to specific issues. Can you afford not to
attend ? June 11th - Emerging Technologies, Hursley Development Lab An informative and extremely interesting day is planned to enable us all to get closer to tomorrows technology. IBM Hursley provides a very elegant historic environment to spend time looking towards the future. Included in the program: ‘Grid Computing’- ‘eLiza’ ‘Communications – Futures’- 20th - Common UK - Go Graphical With Your Applications
Over the years, there have
been many attempts to move away from green screen applications to user
friendly, GUI based ones. But now, there is a simple interface for your users to
use – and one which they understand – the browser. This meeting will cover
everything you need to know to develop a graphical applications strategy, and
then to start rolling out the applications.

September 5th - Security Briefing
As IT related security
‘incidents’ continue to increase year on year, the need to secure your company
data grows ever more important. The CUA Security Briefing will consider some of
the methodologies that can be employed to keep unwanted users out of your
environments. As well as looking at how you can further protect your
environment, the Security Briefing will highlight some of the techniques these
interlopers use to compromise your systems in the first place. 18/19th - Common UK iSeries Symposium Making the iSeries Fashionable,Royal Court Hotel, Coventry
October
November The issue of managing and motivating staff has always been very important but has received less and less attention over time as the pressures have increased to reduce costs and headcount. This briefing examines some of these issues and looks at where the Industry is going in the future. What skills will be needed in the future and how can I get them? Will offshore be a solution and if so will this be a permanent solution or will I be creating additional management headaches for myself? What’s happening in other organisations? Do they have the same management problems that I have? Answers to these and many other questions will be provided by the briefing.
26th - Managing the Art of Employment for the IT Manager At this event we will be looking at the whole cycle of employment issues from recruitment, through monitoring of staff, absenteeism and discipline to eventual dismissal if needed. In the current climate you may need to make staff redundant and you certainly need all of your current staff to be working well. If they are not these are some of the steps you can legally take. There will also be presentations on handling your recruitment agency to make sure that you get the best person for your available positions. Also we will hear from an real life case of ensuring you are on a firm, legal footing. ?? - LINUX for S/390 A look at the penguin in action (rescheduled) December 5th - Education Day COMMON-UK is ringing the changes a little with its Education Day this year. Like many facets of business, training, particularly technical training, has evolved under the influence of the Internet. To reflect this, and the changes IBM Learning Services have had to undergo as a result, we have focussed on some of the developments in IT training, as well as offering the chance to sample some useful course extracts.
