RPG Enhancements – V5R4 Onwards
Paul Tuohy - Comcon
The V5R4 and V6R1 release saw
significant enhancements in RPG IV, some like the XML support,
so big that they need a whole session to describe. V7R1 has even
bigger enhancements on the way.
In this session we will provide a brief overview of the
enhancements in V5R4 and V6R1 (XML support, embedding SQL in
/Free-format, enhancements in PREFIX support, the new EVAL-CORR
operation code for copying data between data structures, file
definition in subprocedures etc.) and discuss some of the
possible enhancements in V7R1.
Paul Tuohy has worked in the development of IBM midrange
applications for 24 years. He has been IT manager of Kodak
Ireland and technical director of Precision Software Ltd. He is
currently CEO of ComCon, a midrange consultancy company. Paul
has been lecturing at IBM Learning Services in Dublin for the
last 18 years. He is the author of "Re-engineering RPG Legacy
Applications" and "iSeries Navigator for Programmers" and he is
one of the quoted industry experts in the IBM Redbook "Who knew
you could do that with RPG IV?". Paul has won numerous speaker
awards at Common conferences. |

XML for RPG Programmers An introduction
Paul Tuohy - Comcon
XML certainly appears to be the
future of data interchange. It provides a powerful way to
describe and encode data that is system independent. XML is
quickly becoming the standard data interchange language for
business-to-business applications. Along with its sister
languages, XSLT and schemas, this skill is becoming a "must
have" in today's IT world. In this session you will learn what
XML is, the basic syntax of the language, how it can be used in
your applications, and how it will likely affect your
applications in the future. We will also discuss how XML may be
handled in RPG. |
